"BEST ROCK DOCUMENTARY SINCE U2'S RATTLE AND HUM"
METALLICA'S LIFE IS DOCUMENTED FROM MID 2001-MID 2003. WE SEE THAT JAMES HETFIELD TRYS TO KICK ALCOHOLISM, JASON NEWSTED LEAVES THE BAND, THE BANDMATES STRUGGLE TO GET ALONG WITH EACH OTHER, AND THEY TRY TO FIND A NEW BASS PLAYER TO RECORD ''ST. ANGER'' [WHICH WAS A GOOD BUT VERY UNDERRATED ALBUM]. DEFINITELY THE ULTIMATE TREAT FOR METALLICA FANS. WE FINALLY GET TO SEE THE DAY TO DAY STRUGGLES THAT THE BANDMEMBERS OF METALLICA HAVE TO PUT UP WITH. SURE, SOME FORMER FANS [WHO'RE PERHAPS STILL MAD AT LARS ULRICH FOR SUING NAPSTER] PROBABLY NOW THINK THESE GUYS ARE JUST SPOILED MILLIONAIRES, BUT I THINK REAL DIFFERENTLY. I THINK THESE GUYS ARE HONEST PEOPLE WHO DESERVE EVERYTHING THEY'VE GOTTEN FOR THE LAST 20-PLUS YEARS THEY'VE BEEN A BAND. I'VE BEEN A FAN OF METALLICA EVER SINCE I DISCOVERED THEM IN 1992 WHEN I WAS JUST 5 YEARS OLD. EVEN IF YOU DON'T LISTEN TO METALLICA, YOU SHOULD ENJOY THIS VOYEURISTIC LOOK INTO THE LIVES OF THE BAND THAT IS METALLICA. I DON'T CARE WHAT ANYONE SAYS NOWADAYS ABOUT METALLICA, I'M STILL A FAN OF METALLICA. AND I DON'T SEE MYSELF EVER DISLIKING THIS BAND [EVEN IF THEY MIGHT RECORD A FEW WEAK ALBUMS IN THE FUTURE]. I'LL BE BUYING THIS DVD AS SOON AS I GET PAID.

"unwatchable crap"
I am so sorry I watched this DVD. Or at least part of it, before I turned it off. I would warn any Metallica fan not to watch this film. It could easily turn you off of the band. I know it will be a while before I can listen to Metallica and not see the band draped over some sofas whining like spoiled teenagers. I guess part of the problem for me is my volcanic hatred of psychologists and psychology-speak. Everytime the psychologist was on camera, spouting his vapid tripe about the "zone" or some other garbage, I wanted to put my hands through the screen and choke his skinny little neck. And then the band falls for it and starts speaking in psychobabble, whining and bitching about all their little "issues". That is essentially what this movie is, a filmed record of interminable therapy sessions with the band. And these guys just aren't that interesting. James Hetfield is kind of a low-watt clod who prefers to communicate with grunts and smirks. Lars is a phenomenally self-absorbed, self-important jerk who fancies himself a true artiste. He comes across as a hyperactive, selfish little dick. And poor Kirk Hammett, probably one of the greatest living rock guitarists and a truly nice guy who just wants to play guitar and get along, but he literally has trouble putting a sentence together. Okay, so they are not Mother Teresa and not Albert Einstein. So what? Well, I just mention this because they are supposed to be a hard rocking, bad ass band. But they are revealed in this film to actually be a bunch of feuding, moaning, petulant crybaby pampered pussies.
God, watching these guys agonize over some little issue, goaded on by the omnipresent psychologist, you'd think being a multimillionaire, multiplatinum rock star was the hardest, most unfair job in the world.
I suppose if you are just the biggest Metallica fan in the world, and if every single thing they do is of interest to you, then this film might be for you. For me, however, I don't know how I can listen to "Sad But True" or "Master of Puppets" again without thinking of these soft, pampered young millionaires and their smarmy psychologist, sitting in a therapy session mewling like hungry kittens. Maybe Metallica is like sausage. You can enjoy it as long as you don't look at it too closely. This DVD is a boring waste of time. Listen to music instead.

"Is this jurrasic park??!!"
Metalica's so old they should've retired...MANY CENTURIES AGO. they are so old are they what they call "oldies"? or what i call music that people that listened to oldies considred "oldies"

"Deeper than Thou"
To keep and short and sweet. This documentary is amazing.

It lets us deeper into the lives of the Metallica boys than I'd have EVER thought possible.

It made my girlfriend an instant fan of Metallica (and she doesn't even like metal/hard rock).

It solidified my place as a fan of whatever this band does for the rest of time.

Watch it and you'll love it. Share it with a friend and they'll appreciate it just as much.

"St. Anger Sucked, but now I know why!"
I read all the hype about the release of St. Anger and thought that perhaps this was the return to the glorious metal that they rung in the 90's with. I couldn't have been more mistaken. Now, nearly a year and a half later, I watched this movie, and found out why that album sucked so bad. It sbecause they were trying to do something they aren't. While this is a very compelling look into their lives, I found myself wanting to like this album, but having a terrible time listening to it. You see the major musical conflicts in the music, however, the film shows you that perhaps its time to see these guys branch off and try something new.
