From Amazon.com Like many progressive-rock groups from King Crimson, Pink Floyd, and Yes to Genesis, Rush, and Queensryche, Dream Theater has followed its own musical and artistic agenda, trends and hipness be damned. That single-mindedness is borne out on Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York, a full-length concert video shot at Roseland Ballroom in New York City in August 2000; it was the final show on the group's tour supporting its release Scenes from a Memory. With its intricate rhythms and complex song structures, Dream Theater's music is serious and somber to a fault; when gospel singer Theresa Thomason and a backing chorus are brought on for a few numbers, the effect is strangely soothing, as if a layer of humanity smothers the impeccable craftsmanship. The video is decked out in visuals of a mostly silly sort, often literally spelling out the album's narrative (or what passes for it), including reenactments and a portentous narrator. It's all cleverly put together (drummer Mike Portnoy gets director credit), and Kevin Shirley's audio mixing presents the music with clarity and undeniable power. Fans of Dream Theater won't need to be told to snap this up; those unconvinced, however, are not likely to become converts. --Kevin Filipski From Description "Metropolis 2000: Scenes from New York" continues Dream Theater's history of transporting fans to worlds only progressive rock's premier standard bearers could create. ![]() This concert of Dream Theater is fantastic. It's right I don't need to tell anything about Dream Theater. Everybody knows their hability to make great music. But this Show was one of the Masterpieces of Dream Theater. In the intire show they don't miss anything, they simple don't make any mistake! It's Amazing! I strongly recommend this DVD to everyone that Love the Dream Theater's Music. ![]() I feel that the corny effects is annoying. Most people who buy this dvd will be watching it over and over and over again simply for the music. but guess what, everytime you watch it over, you're gonna have to see the damn story line played out everytime! It takes away the rawness of the show. Yes the sound is too low, but you can still enjoy it. I mean come on, most of us either watches it from a computer or their living rooms. the sound is fine for what it's worth! This is the first time i've seen dream theater, first time hearing them, and first time for me to really listen to "progressive" rock. With that said, I feel that dream theater made their music so complicated and difficult it's almost impossible to play along! Most of the songs are choppy (as if there were 20 songs put into 1 song). The song has no particular pattern, it seems like the singer is just coming up with melody right at the spot. Again, the little movies in between songs just annoys the hell out of you when you watch the dvd. It's KINDA cool when you watch it the first time, but after that, who cares????? Along with this dvd, i also ordered john petrucci "rock discipline." I feel that Petrucci is less of a player compared to satriani and vai. His solos just arn't as wild and sometimes they're boring. So far, the only DVD that is by the far the best, would be "cunning stunt" metallica. but then again, metallica has similiar songs, so that's a yawner. every dvd concert out there has their flaws! EVERY SINGLE ONE OF THEM! "cunning stunt" is prob. the best! too bad it's metallica and not steve vai or satriani. ![]() Individually, the members of Dream Theater are the best musicians in their field. Together ... WOW! This DVD is a must for any musician or progressive rock music fan. ![]() Yes, that's correct. Apart from being the last concert of the entire performace of the SCENES FROM A MEMORY album non-stop, this dvd automatically gets 5 Stars because the person reviewing it is on it! Here's how to find me - In the bonus features, find the section that says 'The Fans' - there is a short interview in the beginning with producer Kevin Shirley, and then there's a shot in the concert during 'Metropolis Part 1' followed by a shot outside the concert of all the people waiting in line. There's a big space in the line, and as it pans by, you can hear LaBrie say something like 'Oh...here we go.." and I'm the guy with long dark curly hair who had his sunglasses propped up on his forehead and I stuck my face right in front of the camera for 2 seconds. ROCK N' ROLL IMMORTALITY!!! By the time this concert came around, I had already seen 10 previous shows on the tour. That's right, TEN! My only intention here was to somehow get on the dvd, and I did! For those who missed out on the tour, I suppose it's interesting to see the integration of video clips that went along with the storyline of the album. However, I believe the best part are the bonus tracks, such as A CHANGE OF SEASONS and LEARNING TO LIVE. Buy this DVD for a phenomenal Dream Theater experience. Buy the DVD because I'm on it! Just buy it! |
