![]() I love dream theater but dont understand what happened to them, Oh wait Kevin isn't in the band anymore and after that it went downhill. ...these guys went from pioneer's to followers in 4 years. Dream theater even admits to most of this in the special feature of the dvd where they provide commentary on the show. One after another they cited peices of their new music by naming names. For instance, The intro is [SO PINK FLOYD]and they say" Ok this is like floyd" "This is like yes" This part is like so and so" All of the new stuff are parts of supergroups that they [copied]. I dont understand where the originality went. Possibly with Kevin? Everything seemed to smell of Pink Floyd, yes, etc....Thank god Queensryches operation mindcrime exists because they did it right. When you embark on a "Concept" album create something new, Don't take parts of everyone else's music and storyline and make a DVD. This is great footage and sound but lacks originality. ![]() SFAM is Dream Theater's epic CD that combines all of their finest talents. This concert catches just how well they can pull that off, and add some theatrics to a very theatrical work in a live setting. I was simply AMAZED at how the band performed this very complex 70+ minutes of music, and very pleased at (most, not all) of the camerawork that caught it. This is a Dream Theater's FAN tape, but to anyone unfamiliar, it definitely will seem strange, cheesy and lots of other bad adjectives. But, that being said, this prog-rock fan who grew up with the bands that DT did (Yes, Genesis, etc) and some of the neo-prog bands of the 80's that creep in to their music now and then, still MUST say that DT's talent, ambition, and ability to write a great song put them in my top 10. Getting back to the video, I must say that I was getting put off by some of the 'seventies' effects used after awhile (lots of psychedlic graphics, reverse imaging, etc) - I felt like I could have used some LSD or something to enhance the 'experience'. However, DT's attempt to put the whole video together as a 'story' was great - kind of reminded my of the days when albums did tell a story, and that was OK (even 'cool'). This video does a great job of putting SFAM to a video - there are other DT videos out there that capture 'the band' better without the 'effects' used throughout. ... I was disappointed that one of the best (if the not the best) 'sounding' bands today chose simple technology for the tape (and apparently, the DVD too), thus taking away from the total sound experience this should have been...we can only hope that the next DT video/DVD is different. In the meantime, this is a video that can be enjoyed by all DT fans - but just don't expect more that what I have already mentioned! ![]() How can I possibly decribe the attrocity that was committed when Dream Theater decided to write this album and produce this DVD in less than 1000 words. Up until now I have been the worlds biggest Dream Theater fan. I used to love the atmosphere and complexity of the music. I never condidered Dream Theater to be profound artists, just good musicians. This album was an attempt to make themselves look artistic and imaginative. The album is pretty bad by itself but the DVD is absolute rubbish. You might as well buy it on video because the quality is terrible and only in stereo. Mike Portney can keep a beat but as a film director he should be shot! I think he had a hard time telling the difference between a camera and a drumstick. Not to mention the laughably cheezy acting scenes spliced in with the rest of the concert. Do yourself a favour and do not by this DVD. Their last video was good so if you are considering this DVD buy their last one instead. Also do not but the album "Six Degrees Of Inner Turbulence" it's more of the same [stuff]! ![]() A música está nos dias de hoje atuando como uma linguagem mundial na qual se torna capaz a comunicação entre povos atravez da mesma. ![]() I finally got this DVD. Man, is it great! I loved the live album, so I knew I had to get this. Hearing them play live is one thing, but actually seeing them play is quite another. This is just the best thing ever. Watching John Petrucci and Mike Portnoy go off is just astonishing. They're two of the best musicians ever. John Myung and Jordan Rudess are up there as well. I already discussed how great the music is in my review for the live album, so I won't go into it. Plus, you can't really put it into words, anyway. If you like Dream Theater, you need this. It will put a smile on your face that won't go away. |
