Shot in the fall of 2001 on the group's final tour, Megadeth's Rude Awakening catches a seminal metal band at the top of its game. Although references to the then-recent terrorist events are rare, they instill songs like "In My Darkest Hour," "Symphony of Destruction," and "Peace Sells" with an undercurrent of bitterness, laced with the anger that's already there.

Singer-songwriter Dave Mustaine is a charismatic figure, and one of speed metal's most literate elder statesman, as demonstrated by his astute, witty comments in the DVD's brief interview section. Also on the DVD, the 105-minute concert is augmented by additional footage of five tunes (including "Kill the King" and "A Tout le Monde," dedicated to the victims of the September 11 attacks), shot in grainy black and white. Rude Awakening is the first official Megadeth live concert release, and if it's also the last, it will remain a testament to the band's durability and musical ability. --Kevin Filipski

"What a letdown..."
Just bought this DVD yesterday... where are the other songs? Where's A Tout Le Monde? And it says 24 tracks on it! Where are the other 4? Man, what a letdown... :-(

Plus, it's all out of order... man, I didn't spend $20 to get a crappy DVD presentation of this concert!

(EDIT: (8/8/05) I didn't realize until 20 minutes after writing this review that the other tracks are in the "Underground Concert" section. My bad. 5 stars.)

"MEGA GOOD"
DAVE AND THE BAND AT THEIR BEST....WORTH THE MONEY A MUST HAVE FOR ANY TRUE OLD SCHOOL METAL FAN...........

"A must have for Megadeth fans."
Being a Megadeth fan, I had to give this DVD a try. And I was not disappointed, the majority, if not all, of Megadeth's best are here. The song selection is excellent. From beginning to end. I was not familiar with newer songs such as the great opener " Dread and the fugitive mind" and "Kill the king" "1000 times goodbye" But just like the rest of the songs, they fit right in, to the point that they are becoming some of my favorites. Perfect ending with "holy Words" the energy displayed during the whole concert is amazing.

If you are concerned about the line up, there is nothing to worry about. This band is full of great musicians. Jimmy Degrasso on drums does not skip a beat, sounds as good as the ex-Nick Menza. What can I say about Al Pitrelli, you have to see it to appreciate how good this guy is. ( Currently the musical director and first guitar of Trans-Siberian orchestra)

Sound and video are decent, I have seen better, but is good none the less, some, if not all of the songs sound better than the studio version of them.

There are 24 tracks, the previous reviewer said that there are missing tracks. Not true, all of them are here.

5 of the songs listed ( kill the king, angry again, almost honest, train of consequences and a tout le monde) are on the special features, called underground concert, back to back in black and white. it's from the same concert as the rest of the songs, yet they are on black and white. A stupid thing to do in my opinion.

I wish they have left those songs alone with the rest of the concert, the way they are listed. That is why I am not giving this DVD 5 stars.

So, if you are a Megadeth's fan, you will not be disappointed. This DVD is worth the "ticket".

"Definitely a 'Rude Awakening' if you're looking for more...."
I got this album knowing it had some concert footage, but I thought it would also have a line-up of actual music videos. I was wrong, it's ALL concert footage. I'm not a concert person, I don't care for the experience of listening to a band from over 100 feet away with thousands of people screaming in my ear. I was somewhat disappointed, but at least the interviews were OK. I got 2 of their VHS collections, which I was happy with, but I was hoping for some of their newer videos, not just listening to them onstage. You might as well get their CDs, which sound better.

"Good concert, but it can't be 5 stars"
I love the band and the DVD is good, but without more of the long term members this is more like the Dave Mustaine show - no Nick Menza or Marty Friedman (Chris Poland would've been nice). I would've loved to see Friedman play Live, but Pitrelli does a decent job filling in. However, imitation doesn't feel the same. Even though the music is executed well, there's no cohesive feeling to the performance so the DVD can't get full marks. Despite the band's numerous line-ups over the years this can't be regarded as "real" Megadeth. Plus, the DVD is a little late in coming out that much of the impact has faded.
